Is There A Minimum Age Before Someone Is Deemed A Pedophile?

Police arrested an 18-year-old who confessed to molesting more than 50 children over the past several years. The young man's mother brought him to police after he allegedly told her he sexually assaulted an eight-year-old boy and a four-year-old boy at a motel.

When investigators interviewed the suspect, he confessed to the assault of the two boys at the motel. He also confessed to molesting more than 50 children since he was 10 years old. The molestation incidents occurred in different cities where he had lived.

Reports show that the perpetrator had been staying at the motel where he befriended the two boys, who were also staying there with their parents. The boys were allowed to go into the suspect's room at night when the alleged molestation occurred.

The perpetrator called his mother, confessing what he had done, hours after the incident. "Teen in California admits to molesting upwards of 50 children, police say," (Dec. 3, 2017).

Commentary and Checklist

A pedophile is a person with a neurological disorder, characterized by recurrent, intense sexual fantasies or urges to engage in sexual activity with pre-pubescent children, usually 13 years old or younger.

Most pedophiles are diagnosed as adult males; however, minors, especially teenagers, can be identified as pedophiles as well. According to the American Psychological Association, most sex offenders are not pedophiles, but one pedophile can  sexually abuse many children during a lifetime.

Below are some common attributes of a pedophile:

  • Has few to no friends of his or her age
  • If married, the marriage is more like companionship with little or no sexual activity
  • Often fascinated with childlike activities
  • Often prefers children's activities over adult activities
  • Often seeks jobs with access to children.
